The Australian Ballet's David McAllister says that Graeme Murphy's production of the classic Swan Lake is the company's most requested ballet. Best book yourself a ticket now if you're hoping to catch the long-awaited return season opening on Friday. Murphy's production premiered in Melbourne in 2002 and has since toured London, Cardiff, Tokyo and Shanghai. Loosely inspired by the love triangle of Princess Diana, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, it offers a more human take on a familiar myth with a level of realism and psychological subtlety absent from most traditional versions. The production has won four Helpmann awards, scored Best Foreign Dance Company at the British Critics' Circle national dance awards, and a 2004 season was described in The Age as "the greatest work to be created for the Australian Ballet".
