THE destructive tensions between love and ambition add a twist to an old fairytale in the West Australian Ballet's production of The Red Shoes, which opened at Newcastle's Civic Theatre last night.
The narrative ballet is based on the 1948 film of the same name about young dancer Victoria Page, who is cast as the lead in the ballet by obsessive director Boris Lermontov.Victoria, performed by Sasha Wakelin, falls in love with and marries the ballet's composer. Torn between her love of dancing and love for her husband, Victoria's ultimate decision has tragic consequences.Tour manager and technical director David Mogridge said the company originally performed the ballet in 2006 and it had been a very popular and successful production to which people responded."The story has a story within it, because the director's ballet is based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale about red shoes which would not stop dancing," he said. "Victoria is both performing and living the story."The final performance of The Red Shoes will be at 7.30 tonight at the Civic Theatre. Lisa Barritt-Eyles
