IF THE spotlight wasn't already bright enough, last night in Brisbane it became even brighter for six young Australian Ballet dancers when they were named as contenders for the annual $20,000 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award.

The announcement, made onstage following the opening of the AB's Don Quixote at Brisbane's Concert Hall, means the six dancers - Leanne Stojmenov, Daniel Gaudiello, Jane Casson, Luke Ingham, Robyn Hendricks and Rudy Hawkes - will be scrutinised by judges throughout the year before a winner is named in November.

The award, now in its fifth year, judges the AB's rising stars on the artistic quality of their work, their potential, personal development and support of other dancers. The winner gets a cash prize of $20,000; the finalist with the most votes from the public wins a $5000 people's choice award. -- JO ROBERTS
