Janos Is Hungry For Memories

MAITLAND dancer Janos Szabo has returned to the ballet company in Hungary that kick-started his career.
Szabo spent three weeks in Budapest training professional dancers at the Hungarian State Opera Ballet as well as teaching at the national ballet school. He had studied at the ballet school 25 years ago and then spent 12 years with the Opera Ballet company."On one hand I really miss it, but on the other I'm really proud that I was there and have continued to expand my knowledge of dance since," Szabo told The Word.Szabo returned from Budapest this week and is currently teaching at the East Maitland Academy of Dance.He has been invited to return to Hungary for another teaching stint next year.Szabo came to Australia in 2003 to appear in a Hungarian-Australian co-production of The Merry Widow. During rehearsals in Sydney, he met his now wife Annabella Redman. A renowned performer herself, Redman spent many years singing in Europe with opera companies.Szabo and Redman are based in Maitland.
